Kenangan Kedai Bakmi 88

A stylized action-comedy short film by Lookitin, turning a small noodle shop into an exaggerated battlefield of pride, imagination, and defeat.

Project Story / Overview

Kenangan Kedai Bakmi 88 is a personal short film project developed by Lookitin as an action-comedy piece that blends everyday reality with exaggerated imagination. The story follows a noodle shop owner who refuses to let his shop be “taken away” because he does not have enough money to protect what is his. What begins as a seemingly intense conflict inside the shop unfolds as a full stylized fight sequence, only to reveal in the end that the entire battle is a hyperbolic fantasy playing out in the owner’s mind while he is simply playing Monopoly with his friends. In reality, the “fight” is nothing more than his dramatic inner reaction to losing his property in the game.

This short film was designed to explore how a simple, familiar setting could be transformed into something cinematic, playful, and emotionally expressive. By combining action, comedy, and visual exaggeration, the project turns an ordinary social moment into a dynamic narrative experience. It reflects Lookitin’s interest in developing original stories that are entertaining, visually distinctive, and rooted in relatable human behavior.

The Challenge

The main challenge of this film was to create a strong sense of scale, conflict, and entertainment while shooting entirely in a single location. Because the whole film takes place inside one noodle shop, the visual treatment had to work harder to keep the story feeling dynamic and evolving. The space needed to feel flexible enough to support action choreography, comedic timing, and the shifting perspective between reality and the protagonist’s exaggerated imagination.

Another key challenge was balancing humor and action without losing narrative clarity. The fight sequence needed to feel intentionally over-the-top and stylized, but still believable within the emotional logic of the character. At the same time, the ending twist had to reframe everything in a way that felt playful rather than confusing. This required careful control over blocking, pacing, framing, and performance so that the film could maintain both comedic energy and storytelling coherence.

Our Approach

We approached this short film by fully maximizing the possibilities of a single location and treating the noodle shop as an active storytelling space rather than just a backdrop. Every corner, angle, and physical element of the setting was used to support movement, rhythm, and visual variety. Through a stylized cinematography approach, we designed the film to feel bigger, more dramatic, and more energetic than the actual space would suggest, allowing the audience to experience the protagonist’s imagination in an exaggerated cinematic way.

The visual language was built around expressive framing, dynamic camera movement, and a heightened sense of action that supports the comedic tone of the story. Instead of relying on scale through multiple locations, we focused on atmosphere, composition, and choreography to create impact within limitations. This approach allowed the film to stay compact in production while still feeling rich in tone, playful in execution, and memorable in its overall storytelling style.

The Outcome

The final result is a short film that transforms a modest and familiar environment into a visually stylized action-comedy narrative filled with tension, absurdity, and character-driven humor. The reveal that the battle exists only as an exaggerated fantasy gives the story a playful twist, while the ending — where the shop owner still loses — reinforces the irony and charm of the film. It is a story about pride, attachment, and overreaction, told through a cinematic language that feels entertaining and self-aware.

For Lookitin, this project represents more than just a short film. It reflects our interest in developing original intellectual property and exploring how strong visual direction can elevate simple ideas into compelling screen experiences. Kenangan Kedai Bakmi 88 shows how limitation in space can become a creative strength when combined with stylized cinematography, clear narrative intention, and a willingness to push ordinary situations into something unexpectedly cinematic.
